February board meeting looks at parking improvements

The monthly meeting of the Daytona Beach College Board of Trustees was held Feb. 21 and topping the agenda was a plan presented by college president Dr. Kent Sharples.

Dr. Sharrples wants to redesign the existing parking lots facing International Speedway Boulevard. Calling for "saving more green space," he said that the scheduled changes to the southeast parking lot should be delayed in favor of adding an additional parking lot and possibly a soccer field on the west side of the Mori Hosseini Center.

Plans to add a "European-style roundabout" and an "unrestricted thoroughfare" from White Street to Highland Avenue were also put forth. The changes were approved unanimously by the board.

Dr. Mary Bennett, DBC Trustee, said that the Women's Center had released $40,000 to assist women in need of child care. Bennett also asked for more donations so that student mothers could continue to pursue an education.

Also discussed during a workshop prior to the meeting was the progress of the Dominican Republic and Bahamas projects. The projects are an effort to bring a "community college-style" system to these nations. Dr. Charles Carroll said that the school in the Dominican Republic is tentatively slated for an August opening, while the Bahamas school should bring their student success lab online by April.
